batch identification associated with it in the system. If physical labelling is done in a separate step\u2014manual, or on a machine not synchronised with the sorting\u2014there is a real risk: a label that does not match the batch the box actually contains. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is why, in a well-designed end of line, automatic labelling is not a standalone machine: it is one more function within the same system that identifies, verifies quality control and routes each box to its destination. The label is printed with the data the system has already recorded at that moment, and that same record is what later makes it possible to respond to a complaint or an inspection in minutes instead of days. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_information_must_appear_on_a_meat_product_label\"><\/span>What information must appear on a meat product label<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not all information is mandatory for all products, but this is what European legislation generally requires:<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><th><strong>Label item<\/strong><\/th><th><strong>Mandatory<\/strong><\/th><th><strong>Legislation requiring it<\/strong><\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>Name of the food<\/td><td>Yes<\/td><td>Regulation (EU) 1169\/2011<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Batch number or reference<\/td><td>Yes<\/td><td>Directive 2011\/91\/EU + Regulation (EU) 931\/2011<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Date of minimum durability or use-by date<\/td><td>Yes<\/td><td>Regulation (EU) 1169\/2011<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Net quantity<\/td><td>Yes<\/td><td>Regulation (EU) 1169\/2011<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Name and address of the responsible operator<\/td><td>Yes<\/td><td>Regulation (EU) 1169\/2011<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Country of origin \/ slaughter<\/td><td>Yes (beef, and extended to pork\/sheep\/poultry)<\/td><td>Royal Decree 1698\/2003 (beef) + Regulation (EU) 1337\/2013<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Storage conditions<\/td><td>Yes<\/td><td>Regulation (EU) 1169\/2011<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Internal traceability code (QR, DataMatrix, RFID)<\/td><td>Optional, but increasingly required by major retailers<\/td><td>\u2014<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The batch reference is the data point that connects the physical label with the digital traceability record: without it, all the information the system captured during automatic sorting has no way to be linked to the physical product.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Automatic_labelling_technologies_at_the_end_of_line\"><\/span>Automatic labelling technologies at the end of line<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a meat plant, automatic labelling is mainly implemented using three types of technology, which are often combined:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Print &amp; apply<\/strong>: prints the label on demand (with variable batch, date and weight) and applies it directly to the box via an applicator head, without stopping the line.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Weight-price labelling<\/strong>: integrates an approved scale that calculates the price based on the actual weight of each piece and prints it along with the rest of the mandatory data.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Traceability codes (QR \/ DataMatrix \/ RFID)<\/strong>: in addition to readable text, they include a code that allows the entire batch history\u2014origin, slaughter date, quality checks passed\u2014to be consulted digitally with a simple scan.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The key technical point is not the labeller itself, but its synchronisation with the rest of the end of line: the box identification, the quality control result (for example, passing through a metal detector) and the destination assigned by the sorting system must be reflected on the same label, at the same moment.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"EU_and_Spanish_legislation_on_traceability_and_meat_labelling\"><\/span>EU and Spanish legislation on traceability and meat labelling<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Traceability and meat labelling are based on four legal texts that every plant should know:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/ES\/TXT\/?uri=CELEX%3A32002R0178\"><strong>Regulation (EC) 178\/2002<\/strong><\/a>: sets out the general principles of food law and requires all operators to have systems to identify from whom they receive and to whom they supply each product\u2014the \u201cone step back, one step forward\u201d traceability.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/eli\/reg_impl\/2011\/931\/oj?eliuri=eli:reg_impl:2011:931:oj&amp;locale=es\"><strong>Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 931\/2011<\/strong><\/a>: develops 178\/2002 specifically for food of animal origin. It requires recording, for each dispatch, the nature of the product, the quantity, the name and address of the supplier, the batch reference and the dispatch date. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/ES\/TXT\/?uri=CELEX%3A32011R1169\"><strong>Regulation (EU) 1169\/2011<\/strong><\/a>: regulates food information provided to the consumer\u2014name, batch, date, net quantity, storage conditions and the operator responsible for the product.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.boe.es\/buscar\/doc.php?id=BOE-A-2003-23402\"><strong>Royal Decree 1698\/2003<\/strong><\/a>: Spanish legislation specific to the labelling of beef (including minced), which adds the obligation to indicate the animal\u2019s category, sex and country of slaughter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Spain, according to AESAN guidelines, traceability records for meat products must be kept for a minimum of five years.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_labelling_is_integrated_into_an_automated_end_of_line\"><\/span>How labelling is integrated into an automated end of line<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At BLASAU we design end-of-line systems where product identification, quality control, box sorting and labelling form a single automated process: the box is identified, verified, sorted to its output and labelled with the corresponding batch data, all within the same flow and without intermediate manual operations.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This integration is what turns a simple labeller into a true traceability solution: it is not enough to print a label\u2014you must ensure that the data on it is exactly what the system has recorded for that box at that moment.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Frequently_asked_questions_about_automatic_labelling_and_batch_traceability\"><\/span>Frequently asked questions about automatic labelling and batch traceability<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Is_automatic_labelling_mandatory_in_a_meat_plant\"><\/span>Is automatic labelling mandatory in a meat plant?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No. The law does not require labelling to be automatic, but it does require the mandatory information (batch, date, origin, quantity) to appear correctly on each product. Beyond a certain production volume, manual labelling is no longer reliable for ensuring that accuracy, so automation becomes the practical way to comply with the legislation without errors. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_the_difference_between_traceability_and_labelling\"><\/span>What is the difference between traceability and labelling?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Traceability is the ability to reconstruct a product\u2019s complete journey through data records at each stage of the process. Labelling is the physical\u2014or digital, via a code\u2014means that makes that information visible on the product.
